As Australia’s infrastructure ages and pressures mount, asset management is critical to ensuring assets remain safe, resilient and cost-effective over their full lifecycle.
Queensland infrastructure owners are facing a quiet but growing challenge as much of the state’s essential infrastructure is ageing in the face of increasing competition and rising costs across the sector.
While new projects play a vital important role, the task of managing, maintaining and renewing what already exists is ever present.
This is where world-class asset management becomes critical and why IPS recently appointed Michael Mitchell to the newly created position of General Manager, Asset Management.
“Asset management is sometimes misunderstood as an administrative or compliance-driven exercise,” Michael said.
“In reality, it’s about ensuring infrastructure continues to deliver safe, reliable and affordable services over its entire life.
“Effective asset management includes clarity around what assets exist, their criticality to the process, how they are performing, the risks they carry and where investment will have the greatest impact. Importantly, it shifts decision-making away from reactive toward long-term proactive planning.
Many Queensland infrastructure networks were built decades ago, often to standards that did not anticipate today’s population growth, environmental expectations or climate extremes.
“But age alone isn’t a reliable indicator of risk,” Michael said.
“Two assets of the same age can perform very differently depending on how they were designed, built, operated and maintained.
“This is why taking a lifecycle approach is best, considering whole-of-life costs, maintenance requirements, and eventually, replacement.
“It allows infrastructure owners to balance capital expenditure against ongoing maintenance and risk, ensuring assets are fit for purpose not just today, but decades into the future.
“For complex infrastructure like water treatment plants, dams and pipelines, which is my background, lifecycle thinking isn’t optional. These are long-lived assets with potentially dire consequences in the event of failure.”
IPS works with infrastructure owners to support asset management planning, maintenance strategy development, condition assessment, lifecycle optimisation and integration with capital delivery.
