It’s time to prove once again that the shovel is mightier than the gavel as we go head-to-head with Helix Legal for the second Engineers V Lawyers ‘Mock’ Debate.
Shine your shovels! IPS is thrilled to announce the return of the Engineers v Lawyers ‘Mock’ Debate, and as reigning champions we are ready to defend our title with facts, logic and a little friendly fire.
Following the success of last year’s entertaining showdown, the stage is set once more for another unforgettable (and free) evening of wit, rivalry and good-natured competition against the team at Helix Legal.
This year’s thought-provoking topic is ‘Rules are always absolute, not advisory’. In a deliberate twist, the engineers will argue the affirmative – rules are absolute, no exceptions, ever, while the lawyers will argue that rules are merely suggestions… especially when you know how to interpret them. As always, the audience will decide the winner!
Last year, the engineers secured a convincing 75 per cent of audience votes, after arguing that AI was not fundamental to project success.
IPS’ own Sarah Parrish joined forces with Amy Wood (Jacobs) and Daniel Field (The Stratoship Group) to take on Janelle Kerrisk, Emily Taylor, and Jonathan Miliszewski from Helix Legal.
The packed Brisbane Club crowd of over 100 guests enjoyed a lively evening full of laughter, surprises, and even a few AI-generated curveballs.
Host Andrew ‘Chappy’ Chapman from the Queensland Major Contractors Association set the tone for the night, donning a legal wig and delivering plenty of good-natured jabs at both sides. He returns for this year’s showdown, which takes place at The Brisbane Club, on Wednesday November 12 – 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
IPS Director Sascha Kurz said she was looking forward to the rematch.
“Events like this are such a great reminder of how well our professions complement one another,” she said.
“There’s healthy competition, of course, but also mutual respect and plenty of laughs. Bringing engineers and lawyers together in this way creates genuine connection and celebrates the personalities behind our projects.
“We can’t wait to see how this year’s topic plays out, and whether the lawyers can keep up with the engineers!”
